I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes.

In physical therapy I saw it ALL THE TIME.

Once happy lives…ripped to shreds because of a CATASTROPHIC FALL.

One day your friend Betty is watering her award winning tulips and chattering in the summer breeze without a care in the world.

But the next day she trips over a shammy in the garage and FALLS HARD on the unforgiving concrete floor!!!!

And a nightmare of devastation begins.

First she’s off to the emergency room…a dozen x-rays…an MRI…massive hip surgery….endless rehab…constant agonizing pain….soul killing medical expenses….life in a wheelchair….then the hospital for MONTHS.

But there’s something WAY WORSE THAN THAT!

While she’s lying in her hospital bed…having her Wednesday afternoon visit with her two adult children…Betty notices something strange happening….and she has a bad feeling about it.

She catches the glances flashing back and forth between them as they whisper in the corner.

She knows SOMETHING…is going on.

What is it?”, she says.

The two of you are acting so weird.”… “Is something wrong?'“

Her daughter speaks up first…holding back obvious tears.

Mom”, she says with her voice breaking into a thousand pieces.

The older son jumps in trying to save the day.

Mom I think we need to talk.”

About what?” , Betty sounds confused and perplexed…but inside she’s TERRIFIED to hear what’s next.

I don’t think you can go home Mom.”, the son says with a face as grey as death….

The words hit her like a thunderclap.

What do you mean?”, Betty says with a look of horror on her face ….pulling her patchwork quilt up to her neck.

She grips the bed rails and braces herself for what she’s about to hear…

…SHE CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING…

Since you can’t take care of yourself anymore….. WE HAVE TO SEND YOU TO A NURSING HOME.

So…instead of enjoying the dream of living out her retirement in her own home…making sugar cookies with the grandkids…reading Martha Stewart in the little gazebo in the garden…..and telling all the neighbors about her award winning tulips…

…your friend Betty spends the rest of her days wasting away in a used wheelchair at “Shady Brook Acres” eating microwave broccoli made by a blue haired dropout named “Max”…and dreaming of what life was like BEFORE she took that devastating…life destroying fall…always wondering to herself….

Was there something I could have done to prevent this from happening?”

It’s a tale as old as falling itself.

A once happy life turned upside down and inside out in ONE INSTANT because of a DEVASTATING fall.

It won’t matter how much money you have when your body is wrecked and your health is gone.

The promise of your “golden years” is replaced by a black cloud of endless darkness.

Remember the ominous statistic you read at the beginning of this letter -

40 % of all people hospitalized from a hip fracture NEVER RETURN HOME AGAIN.

The risk of falling and having a massive injury IS VERY REAL.

BUT….FALLING IS NOT THE REAL PROBLEM

Let me quickly explain.

There isn’t a person alive today that hasn’t fallen down…at least once!

Falling is something that…UNFORTUNATELY…happens to EVERYBODY at one time or another.

It’s unavoidable.

As important as it is to try to KEEP YOURSELF from falling…you know…”fall prevention.”

It’s only part of the solution.

“Fall prevention” is only good….until you fall…right?

The KEY to protecting yourself from a major injury is KNOWING WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FALL.

After studying falling injuries for YEARS in physical therapy I noticed something really interesting.

HOW the person fell…had A LOT to do with the injury they sustained.

These 4 statistics PROVE my point -

  • FACT

    For men, SIDEWAYS FALLS were associated with 15 TIMES greater risk for hip fractures compared to forward falls.

  • FACT

    For women, SIDEWAYS FALLS were associated with 13 TIMES greater risk for hip fractures compared to forward falls.

  • FACT

    Over 90% of hip fractures are caused by falling ON or NEAR the hip.

Those stats say a lot….but look at this one….

  • FACT

    Fall direction was a MUCH stronger predictor for increased hip fracture than low bone strength. When a fall occurs, CHANGING FALL DIRECTION may be the MOST EFFECTIVE to prevent hip fractures.

READ THAT LAST ONE AGAIN.

Once I realized that it was not just falling…BUT FALL DIRECTION…that was causing deadly hip fractures I knew I was onto something.

So I locked myself in my house for MONTHS working on the solution.

I talked to all the physical therapists…x-ray techs…PT assistants…and rehab experts I knew.

I researched every book, medical journal and article I could get my hands on relating to falling injuries.

I interviewed 3 doctors that specialized in hip fractures and 2 orthopedic surgeons that specialize in hip replacements.

I spoke with DOZENS of my own patients asking them about their falls and experiences…

Until I was finally satisfied that I had the solution.

So I put together a falling skills course that was initially called “The Ultimate Falling Skills Workshop.”

I worked with small groups in physical therapy teaching people how to fall in practical situations without getting hurt.

But pretty soon…word got around…and I realized just how many people wanted to know this stuff!

ABOUT TIM - Tim Rabetoy has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Personal Trainer and professional athlete for over 25 years.

He has been a professional member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2002. 

Tim graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science from the prestigious College of Health at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 2000. 

While in college he was the personal trainer to the Governor of Utah and his staff.

Tim spent 7 years in physical therapy working with all manner of injuries and specializing in balance problems, posture problems and exercise for medical conditions like diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease.
